Why we use plexiglass in Cosyglazing secondary glazing

A guide to plexiglass in secondary glazing

Plexiglass, also known as acrylic glass or polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), is a lightweight, shatter-resistant alternative to traditional glass. It offers excellent optical clarity and durability, making it a popular choice for various applications, including secondary glazing.

Mitchell and Dickinson use plexiglass in our CosyGlazing secondary glazing solution to enhance energy efficiency, reduce noise and provide an unobtrusive alternative to double glazing.

What is plexiglass?

Plexiglass is a transparent thermoplastic material that is often used as a glass substitute due to its high impact resistance and excellent light transmission. Unlike traditional glass, it is significantly lighter, making it easier to handle and install. Additionally, plexiglass has better thermal insulation properties, reducing heat loss and improving energy efficiency in buildings.

Why use plexiglass in secondary glazing?

One of the main reasons we use plexiglass for CosyGlazing is its ability to enhance insulation without the need for extensive modifications to existing windows. Secondary glazing involves adding an extra pane inside the existing window frame, creating an air gap that helps trap heat and reduce draughts.

Plexiglass is ideal for this purpose due to several key benefits:

7x more thermally efficient than glass – This makes a huge difference in retaining warmth and reducing heating bills.

Lightweight – Easier and safer to install and remove, especially on large or fragile window frames.

High thermal performance – CosyGlazing achieves a U-value of 1.7, which is nearly as efficient as double glazing (1.6) and a vast improvement over traditional single glazing (5.5).

Effective noise reduction – The additional layer dampens external sound, perfect for properties in busy areas.

Shatter-resistant – A safer, more durable alternative to traditional glass.

Ultra-clear and non-yellowing – Maintains visual clarity and preserves the look of your windows, year after year.

Unobtrusive and reversible – The system is fully removable, ideal for listed or conservation properties.
