An effective way to reduce the carbon footprint of your home is to improve its energy efficiency.

Energy efficiency is hugely important to us. Our founder Mukti Mitchell is well known for his work encouraging people to lead a low-carbon lifestyle. Sustainability and environmental responsibility are cornerstones of Mitchell & Dickinson’s values.

For the sake of the planet, we can’t afford to keep using the world’s limited fossil fuels at the current rate. We’ve devised a package of window, draught and loft insulation solutions for period and listed properties that reduce heat loss by around one third. Our CosyGlazing secondary glazing has been designed to improve the energy efficiency of existing windows and reduce heat loss from single-glazed windows by as much as 70%.

Proof of our energy efficiency

As proof of our efficacy, we were recently involved in a study which compared one of our refurbished windows with a Historic England refurbished window. The study states the following: ‘WARM Low Energy Building Practice carried out an air test on a Mitchell & Dickinson refurbished window in Exeter. This achieved an air leakage of just 9m3/hr at 50 pascals, a significant improvement on a window refurbished by Historic England, which was reported to have achieved 26m3/hr at the same pressure differential.’

Reduce your bills

Energy costs for an average UK household have soared by 72% since 2021 and are predicted to remain high in the long term. Based on our 14 years of experience, the annual energy costs for a typical period home are now between £3,000 and £5,000. If prices rise by 10% per year a £4000 bill now will increase to over £10,000 per year by 2034.

Our comprehensive package of windowdraught and loft insulation costs between £8,000 and £15,000 for a typical period home. The installation usually pays for itself within 6-10 years, representing a financial return of 10-15% per year.

And if you are considering installing a heat pump, effective insulation can reduce the size and cost of the heat pump you’ll need, and the cost of the energy used to run it, because the insulation will reduce your property’s overall heat loss.
