This was the second job that we’ve had M&D do for us and, as with the last job, the experience throughout was of the highest quality: clear communication about the works (including specific clarification about how to resolve an issue with overly wet woodwork); polite, reliable and friendly employees; clean and tidy job; and of course, excellent results.
We are too hot all the time! Before the CosyGlazing was installed we were using 4 bags of coal a week. As soon as they had finished the installation of secondary glazing, draught proofing and loft insulation, out coal use dropped to 1.5-2 bags a week. It’s heaps better. It also sound proofs the children’s bedrooms so they don’t get woken up by heavy footsteps in the street. It’s February but the children say “it’s like summer in the house mummy.” They can go to the bathroom without getting wrapped up in towels first.
If only all tradespeople could be this good.
M&D are in a different league to most installers. Second time using them and exceptional service as before. From start to finish you feel in good hands. Tony and Josh were polite, courteous and left no trace of their amazing work. I could not recommend M&D more highly; if only all tradespeople could be this good.
Very nice people to deal with and we’re very pleased with the results.
Mitchell & Dickinson draught proofed six casement windows at our home and added secondary glazing. Very nice people to deal with and we’re very pleased with the results.
We can instantly see the benefits and I can highly recommend M&D.
We have a listed building with many single-glazed windows. We were losing a lot of heat, had terrible draughts, the windows wouldn’t open and close, and we heard a lot of noise from outside. M&D tackled all of these issues by carrying out general restoration work and installing CosyGlazing. The team were professional, respectful and understood how to work in a property with many quirks. While older properties will never be perfect, the work carried out has eliminated/heavily reduced the issues. We can instantly see the benefits and I can highly recommend M&D.
Neat, tidy, unobtrusive and will hopefully cut our energy costs.
We chose secondary glazing with some trepidation as our 17th Century mullions are beautiful and we were worried about spoiling them. We are delighted with the result: neat, tidy, unobtrusive and will hopefully cut our energy costs. Luke and his team were a pleasure to have in our home. They have a great work ethic and took care to make as little impact on our lives as possible. They were always bright and friendly and meticulous in their work.
Their craftsmanship and professionalism was peerless.
We live in a draughty early 19th century grade II listed thatched cottage, no surface is level, no window straight, and no wall vertical. Legislation limits what we can do to rectify any of the above and ‘routine’ work can prove to be anything but! Set against this background we approached Mitchell & Dickinson with a degree of trepidation.
We needn’t have worried. Everyone we have had dealings with has been cheerfully professional and incredibly reassuring. Every step happened when it was scheduled to happen, no chasing up, no wasting time waiting for a call. We had two surveys and ample opportunity to ask questions. When I pointed out our wonky windows to one technician his reply was ‘don’t worry, wonky is what we do’!
The day came for the work to start…again bang on schedule. The work took a fortnight, Brett was with us all the time, George for the first week, and Gary for the second. Their craftsmanship and professionalism was peerless, but better than that they were the tidiest and most considerate craftsmen we have ever encountered. Put simply they turned up, cracked on, cleaned up and left – never leaving a mess and never leaving the house unsecure.
The quality of the secondary glazing is outstanding. All our windows now fit. We amuse ourselves by seeing if visitors spot the plexiglass (they don’t). We are delighted thank you!
Excellent work. Kept to time and budget. Makes a big impact to an old house.
Excellent work. Kept to time and budget. Makes a big impact to an old house.
Impact on temperature in the house and don’t notice the secondary glazing.
Tony and his team fitted ten windows with secondary glazing for us. We are very happy with results and the service received. Fitting was performed very efficiently on a wide range of windows, with careful colour-matching, etc. We’ve noticed the impact on temperature in the house (Georgian cob construction, Grade II-listed) and don’t notice the secondary glazing itself. There were some minor issues with two windows after fitting, but these were efficiently and effectively addressed by the team, with Tony himself returning to rectify in under an hour.
Experienced in heritage properties, with high-quality products and craftsmanship
We moved into our Grade II-listed cottage in January 2021. It was built in 1885 and is a Tudor design with brick (cavity) walls downstairs and timber construction upstairs.
Listed buildings have been exempt from EPCs since 2013 but I found a 2011 EPC with a G rating (worst). I could see from our viewings that the previous owners had not invested in energy efficiency improvements. Two weeks after moving in we had a visit from the ‘Beast from the East 2’. I took some thermal images and could see that our home was glowing and heating the sky!
There are many myths regarding what works and improvements owners can make to listed buildings, so I researched the Historic England library and the secondary glazing market. Before placing the (Phase 1) order, I contacted the New Forest National Park planning department and received a letter back from their Buildings and Conservation Officer advising:-
“Listed Building Consent and Planning Permission are not required to install secondary glazing, so the contractors (Mitchell and Dickinson) can be engaged for the final measurements and installation at your earliest convenience. The company are clearly experienced in working on heritage properties and their products and craftsmanship are of high quality, suitable for use in listed properties.”
From Sales (Dan, Ed and Kirsty), Planning (Rachel) and Installation (Dominic, Will and Matt), we have found M&D to be very helpful and professional throughout. Listed Buildings are individual, so will throw up obstacles requiring project managers to think on their feet to find solutions. Dom was served a number of curveballs but he remained calm throughout, and identified cost-effective solutions.
Payback for Phase 1 was calculated as 4.9 years – this was before our electricity and LPG went up by 50%. It is early spring and we have had a few cold mornings. My wife and daughter have commented that the house feels warmer already. We are very happy to recommend Mitchell & Dickinson’s insulation solutions for period or listed properties.
We look forward to a much cosier winter.
I don’t often write reviews but I can thoroughly recommend M&D. The office staff were extremely efficient and Tony and Josh, who fitted our secondary glazing and insulation, did an excellent job with enthusiasm and great attention to detail. We are very happy with the result and look forward to a much cosier winter.
Mitchell & Dickinson employees proved to be helpful.
We were delighted with the work undertaken at our cottage. Mitchell & Dickinson employees proved to be helpful, highly skilled and very pleasant to deal with.
They really made the effort to make sure the space was cleaned each night.
We had a couple of quotes for secondary glazing, and although M&D were overall more expensive I think it was worth it. We also had the insulation work completed on the windows which I believe will help during the winter. We suffered with a lot of condensation, after the works it hasn’t completely gone but we can definitely see a vast improvement, only a slight mist now. All of the team have been very helpful. Kirsty was excellent in providing the initial information. Kai and Keith were amazing. They are true craftsman who are passionate about the work and service they provide. It is messy work but they really made the effort to make sure the space was cleaned each night during the project work. I would not hesitate to recommend M&D for insulation and secondary glazing work.
The window system is great.
The two-person team who did the install were friendly, tidy and have done a very neat job. They also had to lug their gear up and down the lane from the high street (due to parking limitations) and did this all without a grumble or complaint.
All in all, I am very happy to recommend. The window system is great, condensation pretty much eliminated, it feels warmer already and it does a decent job of noise reduction.
Their employees are delightful, courteous, fun and brilliantly competent.
M&D have done secondary glazing and loft insulation. Also dry-lining – a layer of insulation board on top of the existing plaster-board wall. Their employees are delightful, courteous, fun and brilliantly competent. I am always slightly sad when they leave! Expensive, but on balance worth it.
From the outside it is impossible to tell we have secondary glazing.
Excellent job. We have just had CosyGlazing fitted to six windows. We were slightly nervous that the new glazing would detract from the appearance of the existing windows (which are old wooden sash windows – great to look at, but hopeless when it comes to insulation!). However, our fears were completely unfounded – from the outside it is impossible to tell we have secondary glazing, and even from the inside the windows still look good. The team were also very friendly and tidy, and we had excellent communication from head office. Very happy with the result.
A near invisible system of secondary glazing in a listed building.
Good communication, and honest, reliable fitters. Any problems were dealt with promptly and without fuss. A near invisible system of secondary glazing in a listed building. We look forward to a cosier winter.
We are extremely happy with our choice.
We were extremely happy with the job Mitchell & Dickinson did. They were more expensive than some other companies but they clearly offer a far better product and we are extremely happy with our choice. Luke, Zac and Jack (the installers) were lovely guys and it was no bother having them working in the house and they made the process as easy as possible. Thank you.
Improving the energy efficiency of an ancient house.
The house is an ancient Dartmoor longhouse and the windows were crooked and very weathered, and in a pretty bad state. They now look terrific. They open and close easily, the drafts are all gone and the secondary glazing is almost invisible. We had struggled long and hard to find a way of improving the energy efficiency of an ancient house without destroying its character and were so relieved to find Mitchell & Dickinson’s perfect solution.
A significant improvement to a once very draughty entrance hall.
Fitted CozyGlazing to our Victorian cast iron diamond paned windows. The product is almost invisible from the inside. M&D also fitted draught proofing to the Victorian oak front door, which has made a significant improvement to a once very draughty entrance hall. The installation team were fantastic, attention to detail and quality was exceptional. The team were in the house for two weeks but were very neat and tidy and self sufficient.
We are delighted with the CozyGlazing.
We would highly recommend Mitchell & Dickinson. We had restoration work carried out on the wooden window frames in our listed cottage and CozyGlazing fitted after. Kevin and John, the two craftsmen, were punctual, discreet, informative and highly skilled. We are delighted with the CozyGlazing which has solved the problem of draughts and heat loss, and they look good too. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Mitchell and Dickinson, or use them again ourselves.
The work was of a very high standard.
I have recently had Mitchell & Dickinson refurbish and fit CozyGlazing to the two sash windows on my Grade 2 listed building. I found the all of the people that worked on this from the office staff to the three guys who did the work to be extremely helpful and informative. The work was undertaken with the minimum amount of fuss and everything was left clean and tidy. The work was of a very high standard and I would highly recommend them to anyone who requires this type of work to be undertaken.
The team were polite, efficient and clean.
We had sash windows insulated, which involved releasing the ones that were painted shut, adjusting all to fit well, fitting brush draught excluders, fitting secondary glazing, re-weighting, refitting and retouching. Similar work was done to multiple casements, including sealing some shut. The front door was also insulated as it was badly fitted and leaked like a sieve. The secondary glazing is wonderfully discrete – not at all obtrusive. The team were polite, efficient and clean, leaving no mess behind. We are already noticing the difference to both thermal insulation and noise reduction.
We are now considering having them return to do two more of our sash windows.
Tony and Matt were our superlative team of installers who finished a four day job in our 18th century cottage last week.
The quality of their work and the finished product is exceptional – refurbishment, draughtproofing and secondary glazing to two sash windows and one metal casement window that it is almost invisible and yet highly effective against traffic noise (and almost certainly heat loss though too early to tell at this stage).
Tony and Matt were delightful and left the rooms where work was completed, and our garage which was temporarily their work shop, clean, tidy and entirely as they found them. All promises and timeframes were met and the office team were also polite, professional and a pleasure to work with.
In summary, we are so impressed with the effectiveness of M&D’s cozy glazing product and the professionalism of the service that we are now considering having them return to do two more of our sash windows.
We have just returned from Italy and are thrilled with our new insulating windows. They are very discreet and smart and will clearly provide excellent insulation. The front door also is quite transformed and fits much more snugly into its frame.
I would like to commend the workers, who installed my internal glazing and refurbished my sash windows, for their professionalism and high standard of workmanship. They worked hard and were friendly and polite throughout their stay. All contact with the company was received in a friendly and professional manner. I would highly recommend this company to other potential customers.
Bedrooms noticeably quieter and warmer. Draught proofing on front door has also worked brilliantly.
Delighted with our glazing. The bedrooms are noticeably quieter and warmer. The draught proofing on our front door has also worked brilliantly. All workmen were friendly and considerate and incredibly clean and tidy. They worked to an excellent standard, even coming back to ensure one heavy pane was sufficiently supported. Would highly recommend!
All three windows are now draught-free and open easily. The room is noticeably warmer.
M&D fitted secondary glazing to our large bay window in a house built in 1881. As the upper sash of all three windows were arched we could not fit standard double glazing as we have done everywhere else. The windows were difficult to open too. The work was excellent, on time and all three windows are now draught-free and open easily. The room is noticeably warmer. The room was well protected and kept clean during the four days of work. Thank you M&D.
Pleased with the smart look of the secondary glazing, you wouldn’t know it was there. Rooms feel warmer.
Work teams arrived promptly each morning, neat and tidy in their work and a delight to have around. Workmanship excellent, and pleased with the smart look of the secondary glazing, you wouldn’t know it was there. Rooms do feel warmer but will have to wait until later in the year to feel the benefit once winter is here. Would recommend.
Big job as my windows needed a lot of restoration. Excellent quality, talented and considerate craftsmen.
So pleased with my windows. A wonderful product that has transformed my draughty house. It was a big job as my windows needed a lot of restoration. An excellent quality of work from talented and considerate craftsmen. Thank you.
Thank you for the excellent work done over the last couple of weeks and to let you know what a pleasure it was having your team on site. There’s always a slight dread sharing your house with complete strangers but the guys were brilliant. They tolerated our dogs, worked around us with minimum disruption and were always polite and friendly. So much so our kids insisted on baking cakes for them in the first week and bring home ice creams for them after our beach trip this week!
Of course the standard of work is vital and the work is top notch but having such nice people around makes the whole process so much more enjoyable.
We have a Grade II Listed 1740 Town House with Georgian facade with 9 front/side sash windows which rattled, leaked and once even let snow into our daughter’s bedroom. We had been looking for years for a suitable secondary glazing solution, which is sensitive to the Listing, easy on the eye and effective in terms of noise and heat loss reduction. Mitchell and Dickinson has been a superb choice! It uses a quality skilled team of surveyors, craftsmen and supported by best customer service. This is not a cheap option, however the payback period is good in terms of energy bills; and the quality of the work is superb. We have noticed immediately a huge difference in warmth in the house as well as a dampening of the external noise. We would recommend this company to anyone. The best customer experience we have had in years! Thank you.
Having looked at a number of competitors, Mitchell & Dickinson were the stand out winner for the task.
The windows in our Grade II-listed house were in a poor state of repair, and most were single glazed. We wanted a cost-effective way to both repair and insulate our windows, which were a mixture of sash and casement windows – some dating from the 17th Century.
Having looked at a number of competitors, Mitchell & Dickinson were the stand out winner for the task. Not only did we really like the product, which could be applied to all window types, but everyone we dealt with during the assessment phase was utterly professional.
The installation team were with us for 2 months; courteous, friendly, tidy and extremely good at their job, they worked closely with us throughout to ensure we were happy with the work and had the opportunity to make any changes as we went along.
We are extremely pleased with the final product and would recommend Mitchell & Dickinson to anyone in a similar position.
Great job! We had M&D teams with us for four weeks over three visits. Partially because of a complex job and partially because of all the little, and not so little, surprises that turned up during the job. We have a listed property and whilst there is some debate whether an LBC is actually required, we applied for one with M&D assistance. No queries from the conservation officer and received approval v quickly.
We did look at a number of systems before settling on M&D. Definitely not the cheapest but the overall appearance is great. It wasn’t a quick decision for us, probably two years from first contact to completion. Helen was our main contact and she was ever helpful and ready to answer our various questions and queries. Equally important for a job of this type is the skill and experience of the fitting teams. The three teams of fitters that we met were all skilled, systematic, calm and thorough.
There is a definite quality approach to the work. They were all polite, clean and tidy. Our project included an amount of restoration and it turned out that there was rather more restoration required than we’d anticipated! Dealing with the surprises was where the fitters skill and experience really made the difference. The end result is a warmer home where the secondary glazing is hardly noticeable.
Mitchell and Dickinson fitted secondary glazing to our listed grade 2 house with no window that was square or entirely straight. The end result is very impressive. The system fits perfectly and it is very unobtrusive. The fitters were polite and helpful and did a great job clearing up after themselves each evening. The office staff were also excellent and professional. Our forever changing timeline for the building works we were having done prior to the secondary glazing was accommodated with no problems.
Thanks Mitchell & Dickinson! This secondary glazing system is amazing – completely unobtrusive & exceeded expectations. More than that, the attendant renovation of the eight sash windows in our Grade 2 listed former vicarage has now made operation of them a pleasure! The team from M&D were highly skilled; they faced more problems with the renovation – wet rot – than expected but did a great job and were a pleasure to have in the house.
Clear quote, considerate working practices and an excellent result.
Great people to deal with, both in the office and on-site, clear quote, considerate working practices and an excellent result.
The end result is exactly as expected and looks great.
Would use again. A very pleasant installation process which the team undertook with the minimum of disruption. The end result is exactly as expected and looks great.
Quieter with reduced traffic noise and better light compared to the old secondary glazing.
A challenging job: Restoring and renovating two large Victorian stained glass sash windows and adding secondary glazing. The company was very professional and easy to deal with from the start, and the installation team were friendly and thorough – ensuring the job was completed on time, on budget and fully to specification. The kitchen is now better insulated; quieter with reduced traffic noise from the busy road we live on, and with better light compared to the old glass secondary glazing. Not cheap but you get what you pay for. Strongly recommended.
The glazing panels were fitted and are unobtrusive and very effective: the house is so much warmer and quieter.
This company installed secondary double glazing and loft insulation in our 18th century house. The work was carried out to an extremely high standard.
We have a mixture of sash and other windows, several of which needed repair. The large repairs were done beautifully with pieces of oak and the smaller areas of rot were taken right back to good wood and filled with epoxy filler. Everything was then finished and repainted and looks marvellous. The glazing panels were then fitted and are unobtrusive and very effective: the house is so much warmer and quieter.
The foreman was Tony and he was assisted at different times by Matt, Peter and Daniel. They were all unfailingly friendly, polite and helpful. Tony kept us regularly informed about what he found as he worked on the windows and he happily dealt with my one or two requests for small changes to the works.
I would definitely recommend Mitchell and Dickinson.
The work was done very efficiently and carefully.
In June 2022, M&D refurbished, draught-proofed and added secondary glazing to three sash windows, and refurbished and draught-proofed a front door. Listed building consent had been refused for replacement of these. The work was done very efficiently and carefully. The team of 2/3 people – full-time over 9 days, with their workshop permanently installed in one room – were a pleasure to deal with. At the moment (first weeks), we are very pleased with the improved acoustic efficiency and expect significant thermal improvement.
Our newly restored windows look brand new and we are extremely pleased!
Kai and the whole team were fantastic – very professional, passionate and knowledgeable about their work. Our newly restored windows look brand new and we are extremely pleased! Thank you!!
I rarely write recommendations but I’m writing this as I want prospective customers of M&D to know they won’t regret their decision.
Mitchell &
